The candidate will be the overall commissioning expert skilled and competent in commissioning Utility Scale Renewables Power Generation Plants (1 GW and above). Experience in commissioning Wind, Solar PV, and Battery Energy Storage (BESS) integrating into large Utility Grid is preferred.
Job Responsibilities
Individual Teams will be available for Unit Commissioning for Renewable Generation Assets (WIND, Solar PV and BESS), Grid Assets (EHV Substation, MV Equipment, STATCOM), associated Control Centres (EPMS, BESS EMS, SAS, Plant SCADA, Plant Controller (PPC) , Hydrogen Process plant controller)
Overseeing the Unit commissioning and ensuring the commissioning process and procedures are aligned to the approved plans or even develop plans for approval by Client and Consultant to ensure that the commissioning is as approved plan and in line with the Utility Interconnection Protocols.
The key responsibility will be to ensure a smooth commissioning and integration into Utility & operating as a Large Micro Grid with connection to EHV Grid. Then the balance between the locally available large Micro Grid Load and the Renewable Generation will be through the control room operation during the commissioning process and the protocols related to Load forecast, Generation forecast, and Commissioning sequences as per the above will all have to ensured. Analysis of all the scenarios during the commissioning process need to be done in advance so that commissioning is done in a smooth manner.
In summary a detailed experience of Integrating large GW Scale plant either as a full lump or in parts is essential to ensure a smooth commissioning for the project.
Understanding the local Utility Grid Code requirements and the Local large Micro grid operating requirements based on the local code is required for developing commissioning plan and executing them plant smoothly.
The person who is playing this role will be the COMMISSIONING EXPERT, overseeing all aspects of commissioning so that Renewable Generation can be integrated into the grid as well as feed the local loads either in stages or as Lump depending upon the project requirements.
The experience in Wind Turbine Generator (WTG) is required for Large WTG (2.5 MW and above), Solar PV plant (2 GW and above) in BESS (500MW / 500 MWH (1C - Charging & Discharging characteristics).
Understanding the functions of controllers available in the plant WTG, Solar PV, BESS including their respective PPC plus Operation of SCADA, EMS, and Overall T&D Management System (Control Centre) is essential to ensure that the unit operations are done smoothly and then integrated with Utility.
The person shall ensure successful integration at 380 / 400 kV level for Wind, Solar, BESS so that the Grid code parameters are met. All the tests that are required to establish to meet the grid code requirements, so that during the commissioning process there is no adverse impact in terms of tripping of protections etc.
Qualifications and Experience
Master’s degree in, Electrical Power System.
Key enabler:
Coordinating the different team within L&T-PT&D organization and with client organisations and consultant who will be overseeing the commissioning and provide a strong technical basis for all the commissioning steps that are being taken and get approvals / convince them technically to make the process smooth and stand up to any technical challenges that may arise in this process for a smooth convergence.
Minimum of 20 years of proven experience, in the role of Utility Grid operation, Monitoring and Control for managing various types of Interfaces such as conventional Synchronous Generation and Renewable Power Generation such as WIND, SOLAR and BESS (i.e. IBR - Inverter Based Resources) into Grid.
Experience with the Utility Grid Operation in Europe / The North America will be added advantage.
Understanding of Monitoring & Operation of Network through Control Centres such as Transmission System LDC and Distribution Management System LDC.
Extensive Technical knowledge & experience in Wind Power Generation, Solar PV generation and BESS.
Thorough Knowledge in Electrical Power System Dynamics. Shall be able to review & interpret the requirements from the Power System Study reports. Proficiency in Usage of Tools like PSS/e/ DIGSILENT/ PSCAD will be added advantage.
Thorough Understanding on Substation Automation System (SAS IEC 61850), Process plant protocols such as MODBUS & Telecommunication protocols IEC 104, IEC 101.
In-depth understanding of Commissioning processes, Standards, and Regulations applicable to Renewable energy projects as per best industry standard practices.
Documentation and Reporting: Maintain comprehensive documentation of inter-area control systems, commissioning activities, and operational procedures. Generate reports on system performance, commissioning progress, and potential improvements.
Shall be able to deal with National Utility Network Operation in ensuring smooth dispatch of active and reactive power within the acceptable limits through Unit commitment (Day Ahead Schedule / Intraday Schedule) as per Local Grid Code requirements/ Industry Standard during the Renewables Power Plant Commissioning Phase.
Ability to proactively assess the Risk and offering mitigation solutions for Operating & Maintaining the Plant Grid Interface with Utility
Strong problem-solving abilities and the capacity to troubleshoot complex technical issues effectively.
Proven project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and deliver results on time and within budget.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
Experience in commissioning Wind, Solar PV, and Battery Energy Storage (BESS) integrating into large Utility Grid is preferred. Commissioning experience in WIND + BESS, or PV + BESS is essential.
Expertise also required in commissioning and understanding of Operations of Large Micro Grid covering only Renewable Plants (IBR – Inverter Based Resources) for nominal Tie-in with EHV Utility Grid for System stability.
